Course aims
To give knowledge of the functioning principles of the nervous system at the molecular level.
Brief description of the course
Anatomy of the nervous system and nerve cell morphology.
Membrane potential, ion channels. Nerve cell communication, synaptic transmission. Neurotransmitters and their receptors. Neuropeptides. G-proteins, secondary messengers.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Principles for the organisation of the nervous system.
Basic knowledge of electrophysiology, termiology and understanding of the activity of ion channels.
The chemical structure, function and regulation of receptors and ion channels.
Signal transduction between nerves and effector cells.
Basic knowledge of intracellular signalling and the roles of second messengers.
Basic knowledge of the formation of memory.
Basic knowledge of sensory transmission.
