Course aims
● Give overview of the principles of environmental sociology and most widespread concepts (including topics of environmental justice).
● Guide students in understanding the complex relationships between society and environment;
● Grasps the factors influencing environmental awareness and -behavior development and to introduce different instruments for affecting them.
Brief description of the course
Introductory course into environmental sociology. Mainly focuses on developing the student’s ability to understand the complex and interrelated relationships between the society and the environment. Next to classical environmental sociology concepts also environmental awareness and environmental behavior topics are addressed. Also topics of environmental justice, environmental education and environmental communication are studies in relation to broader sociological contexts.
Independent work: prepare for discussions (work with literature), taking part in discussions and group assignments.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an overview of environmental sociology principles and main concepts;
- understands the complex relationships between humans and environment and has the basic knowledge to conceptually chart various situations;
- grasps which factors influence the development environmental awareness and behavior and understand the possible ways to influence them;
- critically analyses environmental sociological problems.
