Course aims
The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of basic concepts and methods of statistical inference in the natural sciences. This course is designed for students whose future work will require extensive data analysis in research problems of the biological sciences and to enhance students’ competence in integrating and applying statistical techniques in a practical manner.
Brief description of the course
This course is a combination of training lessons and seminars contains the following topics: a first look at statistics; probability concepts; descriptive statistics; probability distributions; statistical inference and sampling; analysis of variance; applications of the Chi-square statistic; correlation and simple linear regression; multiple linear regression; time series analysis and commonly used statistical models. Computer applications are included. Statistical software packages are used extensively to facilitate valid analysis and interpretation of results. Illustrations and applications are selected from research studies. The pedagogical approach will combine lecturing with problem based and collaborative learning methods.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to explain and apply descriptive statistics to summarize experiment data, select and implement the appropriate statistical procedure needed for a particular experiment paradigm, data collected and question to be answered.
