Course aims
To obtain a systematic overview of the physics of heat and the basics of thermodynamics and skills to solve basic problems in this matter.
Brief description of the course
Ideal gases. Laws of thermodynamics. Introduction to the kinetic theory of gases. The basics of statistical physics: temperature and pressure as statistical quantities, Maxwells and Boltzmanns distributions. Real gases and vapours. Fluids. Crystalline and amorphous substances. Polymers. Questions and problems. Laboratory activities.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the main laws of equilibrium thermodynamics and molecular physics, and the limits to their applicability;
- understands the main concepts and laws of heat and molecular structure;
- has skill to apply the laws of thermodynamics while solving the problem exercises;
- has skill to apply the theory of thermodynamics and that of heat and molecular structure while describing and analysing everyday phenomena.
- can apply the theory of thermodynamics and that of heat and molecular structure when describing and analysing the experiment results;
- can carry out experiments in heat and molecular structure, apply the theory in the analysis of the experiment results;
- can assess the validity of the obtained results and compare them with conclusions deducted from theory.
