Course aims
Supporting subject. Aim of the course is to create prerequisites for acquiring linguistic competence in written and oral Latvian at A1 (beginner) level as established in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course is aimed at students interested in the Latvian language and culture. The course creates prerequisites for managing in Latvian in the study and working context, should the student wish for it
Brief description of the course
Grammar: elementary knowledge of phonetics, orthography and punctuation, forming and using present and past indicative, pronominal verbs; stressed personal pronouns, numerals.
Oral expression: students learn to speak of themselves, their family, interests, studies, work; everyday vocabulary related to weather, travelling, professions and clothing.
Written self-expression: students learn to compile short narrative texts and short letters in non-formal style on everyday topics.
Reading, listening and understanding: students learn to understand short informative texts and listen to short descriptive texts.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Ability to use learned forms in everyday topics in compiling oral and written texts;
ability to recognise and form learned grammatical forms, understand everyday speech, read simpler descriptive and simpler fictional texts;
ability to read correctly simpler texts in Lithuanian;
ability to pass an A1 level proficiency exam.
