Course aims
Develop knowledge to distinguish between different construction materials and readiness to use them in your practical work. Getting to know the properties and processing methods of metals during lectures and practical work. Acquisition of technological knowledge and practical skills in metalwork for teaching this subject at the basic school level.
Brief description of the course
Overview of different metals, structural materials, and their properties. Production and recycling of metals. Writing an independent assignment on metal and metal-related topics in Estonian folk culture. Introduction to the physical properties of various metals for processing purposes. Brief overview of wire and sheet metal production processes. Main processing technologies for wire and sheet metal. Main techniques of benchwork (fitting). Methodology for teaching metalworking.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- distinguishes between and identifies the most common metallic materials;
- knows the general technological and physical properties of metals;
- selects suitable materials for practical work;
- knows metal processing technologies;
- uses metalworking tools;
- perceives object proportions and evaluates the aesthetics of an object;
- knows the conditions and requirements for safe working;
- knows the methodology for teaching metalworking.
