Course aims
- support the acquirement of knowledge of folk art in the context of cultural-historical development;
- create prerequisites to present and independently study item-based folk art;
- aim is that the student understands ethnographical vocabulary and symbols, contextualizes and appreciates Estonian folk culture and textile heritage, and the need
to preserve it (using relevant literature and museum databases.)

Brief description of the course
The course is a combination of lessons in the auditorium and online. Interpreting existing archive material on heritage and considering relevant scientific opinions, this course will introduce the Estonian mindset and its changes. Presentations on Estonian religious background, folk art items, and making a digital portfolio „4 lugu Eesti esemelise rahvapärandi maastikul“. Introduction to Estonian item-based folk culture and its world of patterns. Individual item-based research, that encompasses writing descriptions and making drawings of items in museum collections. Results are presented as a seminar presentation and a text.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands the study of folk culture pieces;
- understands cultural sources and knows how to use them;
- is capable of finding and using thematically appropriate theoretical texts;
- experiences the making of a digital portfolio.
