Course aims
Getting an overview of loom woven textiles and the development of the techniques of weaving Estonian folk rugs in the context of the history of culture and the opportunities of using these techniques today.
Brief description of the course
Learning the basics of making folk rugs and designing their ornaments. Lectures and practical classes systematically cover the following topics: theory of fabric structure and decorative weaving techniques, basic concepts and terminology of weaving, weaving looms and additional equipment; preparatory works for weaving, warping and dressing the loom, weaving, finishing the fabric. On a frame a practice work is carried out, which will be designed and made into a small textile object. The following tasks are solved – planning the organisation of the stripe rhythms and colour harmonies of rugs + rag textiles in interior. Based on the acquired knowledge and skills a textile object is designed and made in rag technique.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a systematic overview of Estonian folk rugs and rag rugs;
- is familiar with and know about the contemporary options of using rag rugs, the ornaments of rag rugs and folk rugs, original fabric types and their qualities, technologies of decorative weaving, terminology and concepts of weaving;
- is able to plan and carry out work from an idea to a product, find a contemporary and creative way of applying the acquired knowledge and skills.
