Course aims
To give an overview of contemporary trends in art therapy, methods and techniques of working with people with special needs and in the process of study trips to get to know main institutions providing art therapy to people with special needs.
Brief description of the course
The following topics will be covered during the course:
1. Special needs and their essence: “normal” and “abnormal” development;
2. People with physical special needs and specific features of working with them;
3. Mental deficiency and understanding children’s development through artistic activities;
4. Art therapy and other creative fields and guiding child’s/ adolescent’s development;
5. Special issues: mental retardation, dying children, seriously ill children, seriously emotionally disturbed children, a pupil with special needs at school, etc.;
6. Ethical issues.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
As the outcome of the course:
Students know different stages of children and adolescents’ development and their reflection through manual activity and how to support children and adolescents’ development through art therapies;
They know what special needs are and are familiar with different types of special needs; They can select and work out activities meeting the needs of people with special needs and carry them out with children;
As therapists they can give meaning to their activity relying on the theoretical material covered by the course;
They are able to analyse the development of people with special needs through manual activities and find opportunities to support it.
