Course aims
To provide an overview of trends in 20th century Estonian art and of the most important artists.To cover traditional colouring issues.
Brief description of the course
Estonian art at the beginning of the 20th century. Influence of modernism, problems of (national) visual identity. The art of the independent Estonian Republic 1918–1940. Higher art school Pallas in the 1920s and 1930s. Optical and narrative painting. The Group of Estonian Artists and functionalist architecture. Style and politics. Politics of official control in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic 1945–1990 and the avant-garde. The regaining of independence and new contacts with Western art movements. Institutional changes. Contemporary Estonian art.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- to gain an understanding of periods and trends in 20th century art in Estonia;
- to understand the role of art in the development of society;
- to understand issues and changes in Estonian art;
- to learn about the most important Estonian artists.
