Course aims
To give students contemporary information about environmental health risks, neutral and promoting factors and of the potential for avoiding health risk factors. To inspire in students a positive attitude towards protection of the environment. Overview of basic genetics, effects of heredity on health, factors influencing genetics and possibilities for avoiding damaging factors. Students acquire skills to teach environmental, heredity and health subjects in secondary schools.
Brief description of the course
Concept of environment. Sense and influence of the socio-cultural environment. Human influences on the environment. Sources of pollution. Influence of the environment on health: promoting health, and risk-factors. The role of the environment on illness. Stress as adaptation. Physical and emotional stress. Excessive stress as a disorder of adaptation. The relationship between thinking and stress. Skills for preventing excessive stress and their teaching methodology. Positive thinking - effective methods of preventing stress-depression. Infections, contagious diseases, immunity, allergy. Prevention of environmental health risks. Basics of hygiene. Concept of genetics. Genes and chromosomes as carriers of hereditary information. Essence and meaning of the genome. Role of genetics in health formation. Hereditary and congenital diseases, their causes and prevention. Gene-project.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Lectures, practical training, group-work: example exercises, presentation of independent group-work results. Assessment of independent work: oral and/or written test on additional material.
