Course aims
The aim of the news course is to teach students to analyze media texts, to find topics of new value independently, to communicate with sources for the development of these topics and to write well-focused, comprehensible and linguistically and technically correct news stories.
Brief description of the course
Learning activities take the form of seminars, where participation is compulsory. The participant of the course must complete the obligatory literature for each seminar, the reading of which is checked by a test, and a graded homework must be submitted by the deadline for each seminar. Detailed instructions for both will be given in the workshop.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the following concepts and is able to relate them to media texts in practice: news threshold, criteria of news value, objectivity of the news, essence of the article, focus of the article, editorial, slippery news;
- knows and is able to distinguish between the main genres of journalism: news, essay history, reportage, opinion story and editorial;
- knows the general principles of the structure of the news and knows the structure of the news story - the reverse pyramid;
- masters the simplest techniques of reporter work, such as finding a topic, describing events, working with sources;
- is able to write news that would be published in a press release;
- is able to see the structural problems of news stories and is able to suggest solutions to improve them.
