Course aims
Students will learn basics of argumentation which they will use to write and edit articles, editorials and columns.
Brief description of the course
Course consists mainly of seminars where students should participate actively.
During the course students will write columns and editorial.
The main focus of the course is written in a logical argument, based on facts. This is part of the opponents ' arguments against the possible prediction and calculation . The course deals with the relevance of argumentation and their comprehensible presentation. The course deals with logic , techniques of demagogy.
Taking into account the logical structure of text is important for understanding the text. Different parts of the text , examples , and generalizations must form an unity. Therefore, one part of the course is to learn informational - logical approach to, and column analysis originating by it.
Students will analyse published columns and must write editorials on given topics. In the end of the course the students shall hand in
1 ) one column on given topic
2 ) one column on chosen topic and own materials
3 ) one editorial on actual topic
The column on chosen topic must be published at Tallinn University Luna news portal.
The course requires access to computer.
For assessing the works will be uploaded in Moodle course homepage.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to collect and define arguments, which is also able to defend and present;
- is proficient in the induction and deduction methods, and is able to use the rules of logic in practice;
- regognizes manipulation in texts and is able to use persuasive arguments in his/her own texts;
- has the idea of writing a column in Estonia.
