Course aims
To provide an overview of the principles, perspectives, and development trends in sustainable thinking and ecotourism. Environmental, social, cultural, economic, and geographic aspects of ecotourism are discussed. A student has to acquire basic knowledge of the planning and development of ecotourism.
Brief description of the course
Main principles and concepts of ecotourism. Concept and principle of sustainable tourism, alternative tourism, rural tourism, and nature tourism and their relationship with ecotourism. An overview of the main destinations and source countries for ecotourism. Economic aspects of ecotourism. Market demand and supply. A description of an ecotourist. Economic research into ecotourism. Impact of ecotourism on the local economy, increases to local income. Impact of ecotourism on nature. Ecotourism in protected areas. Visitor management strategies and methods. Preservation of cultural diversity, related problems, profits, and losses. Inclusion of local people in ecotourism activities. The notion of interpretation, planning phases, different forms and techniques in ecotourism.
