Course aims
The purpose of the course is:
- to support the development of a research-based understanding of the nature and functioning of social and emotional processes in learners of different ages (incl. the teacher him/herself);
- to support the development of an understanding of the importance of taking into account the emotional and social aspects of learning and the teacher's possibilities to support the development of students' social and emotional processes;
- to support learners in understanding the role of a teacher as a group leader and supporter of group processes in relation to the development of social and emotional processes;
Brief description of the course
The course deals with the content or components of social-emotional processes and the role of the surrounding environment in supporting development. More specifically, the focus is on the teacher's own well-being and awareness in the context of social and emotional processes and the teacher's ability to create an environment that best supports the learner's development of social and emotional processes (self-determination, communication and social competence) including the analysis of the peculiarities of working with a group and the teacher's possibilities to treat the group as a resource.
Completion of the subject requires simultaneous registration in the subject KAT7036.HR Teacher Training Internship I or YDP7001.YM Teacher Training Internship I and completion of internships.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- explains the substantive aspects of social and emotional processes (including different components) taking into account developments and drawing on scientific knowledge of educational psychology;
- notices and analyzes the emotional state of oneself and others;
- associates the development of social and emotional skills with coping in different learning situations both from the student's and one's own point of view (incl. communication with colleagues and parents);
- analyzes the level of one's communication skills (incl. active listening, conflict management, communication in different groups) and the impact on daily work as a teacher;
- recognizes their responsibility and opportunities as an emotionally supportive and inclusive learning environment;
- explains the teacher's possibilities in supporting the development of social and emotional processes in the classroom and plans a plan for the possibilities of supporting social and emotional skills based on their specialty;
- is aware of the importance of the ability to work in a group as a prerequisite for learning and applies knowledge of the formation of a collaborative group in one's own practice as a team and analyzes the development of the group.
