Course aims
Support the development of knowledge about social-emotional processes and their development in context of learning; increase the ability to plan, analyse and develop learning environments and activities considering social-emotional processes and their development.
Brief description of the course
1. Social-emotional skills relevant in learning contexts.
2. The development of children’s social-emotional skills in the contexts of brain maturation, cognitive development, and person-environment interaction.
3. Factors influencing the development of SE skills and teachers’ possibilities to support this development (including programs/practices and teachers’ own SE competence).
4. The assessment of SE skills (including assessment methods)
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- describes the content of relevant socio-emotional skills in the context of learning and relate them to learning situations;
- is able to describe the development of relevant socio-emotional skills in the context of learning, taking into account the principles of brain maturation, the individual-environment interaction, and the possible individual differences in SE skills development;
- knows different ways of assessing learners' SE skills and is able to choose the appropriate assessment options for their work (including describing opportunities for collaboration with other professionals);
- knows various ways of supporting SE skills in the classroom and school context (including different programs and the role of the teacher's own SE skills in supporting learners), has analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of different support options, and set more specific goals for developing SE skills in their classroom.
