Course aims
To provide an overview of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a special educational need in the context of contemporary inclusive education. To develop an attitude of valuing the neurological peculiarities of an ASD student. To introduce approaches and opportunities to design a suitable learning environment for an ASD student using the TEACCH methodology. To develop willingness to understand the behavioural peculiarities of an ASD student and to introduce positive interventions. To develop willingness to understand and support the development of the communicative and social skills of an ASD student.
Brief description of the course
Introducing autism from the neurodiversity standpoint
History, etiology and prevalence of ASD
Principles of structured teaching: adjusting physical learning envinonment, creating visual schedules, using work systems
Understanding the behavioural differences of students with ASD introducing positive behavioural strategies
Adapting the instructional content and performance expectations to the individual needs of students with ASD
Supporting the development of the linguistic, social and communicative skills of students with ASD

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- values the individuality of a student with ASD, creates a socio-emotionally supportive learning environment;
- is able to plan a study process for a student with ASD, assign the right class type and compile individual learning plans;
- Is able to assess how the learning environment and study materials meet the needs of a student with ASD and to make necessary adjustments;
- understands the reasons behind a student’s behavioural differences, prevents and solves behavioural incidents, compiles behaviour plans;
- understands the benefit of creating trusting partnership with the student’s parents, values the parent as an expert in their child’s development;
- supports, advises and guides colleagues in noticing and understanding learning differences of students with ASD.
