Course aims
To create opportunities for: - studying special education at the MA level; - acquiring a systematic overview of special education as a branch of pedagogy; - developing a valuing and ethical stance towards working with students with special needs.
Brief description of the course
The nature and approaches of special education; categories, main concepts and terminology of special education. An overview of the history of special education in Europe and Estonia. Special educational needs: distribution, causes, intervention. Inclusive education as a modern education policy. The course materials are distributed via Moodle.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is aware of general education policy and the directions of educational science in the context of inclusive education;
- has basic knowledge of special education, its contemporary approaches, terminology and categories;
- is able to distinguish between and describe special educational needs, is aware of and knows how to adapt the learning environment and learning in accordance with special needs.
