Course aims
To provide an overview of typical and atypical cognitive development and to introduce common neurodevelopmental disorders.
Brief description of the course
This course delivers a comprehensive examination of cognitive development, including its deviations, and provides an in-depth overview of associated psychiatric, neurological, and genetic disorders within the realm of special education. Participants will become acquainted with current research on brain development, brain injuries, behavioral patterns, and the influence of environmental variables, with a particular focus on the practical application of theoretical constructs in special education settings. The curriculum is designed to prioritize a comprehensive exploration of the psychological impacts — across cognitive, affective, and socio-emotional domains — associated with various forms of atypical cognitive development.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- will have a comprehensive understanding of typical cognitive development;
- will have a comprehensive understanding of atypical cognitive development;
- will be capable of integrating obtained knowledge aboout typical and atypical cognitive development within educational strategies and developmental support for children.
