Course aims
To support the development of competencies of research practice and skills of academic communication.
Brief description of the course
Course material is divided into five thematic modules. Each
module ends with the concluding seminar.
1. Doctoral studies and research resources
Planning resources for doctoral studies; organisation of research;
time management. The role of supervisor in doctoral studies.
Electronic journals and full-text databases in social and
behavioural sciences and access to electronic information.
2. Ethics of research. Intellectual property rights.
Ethics of research. Intellectual property rights. Protection of
IPR.
3. Scholarly publications. Scientific texts.
Scholarly publications: types of publications and process of
publishing. Analysis of a scientific text. Reviewing process.
4. Written forms of presenting research results
Written forms of presenting research results (monographs,
scientific article, dissertation, research report, theses). Structure
of different forms. Writing a scientific article. References.
5. Oral forms of presenting research results.
Oral forms of presenting research results: conference
presentation, poster-presentation, moderation, scientific dispute.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has ability to plan the research and to evaluate the stage of research;
- has skills in using electronic and digital information resources and in evaluation of research literature;
- understandsing of research ethics and ability to follow it in research process;
- has knowledge of intellectual property rights;
- has ability and skills to analyse scientific texts;
- has skills to use written and oral forms of presenting research.

Additional information
Individual written assignments and practical assignment about using databases are based on reading compulsory literature, doctoral student's own practical experience and research needs. All the assignments have to be submitted a week before the last seminar.
