Course aims
To create prerequisites for understanding data analytics tools and their applications in the context of information science. To provide a systematic overview of the possibilities of data analytics in library and information work.
Brief description of the course
Modern library and information work is intertwined with data and their analysis. This course focuses on data analytics, related software and data visualization capabilities in library and information work.
Themes:
- Data and big data in a modern library and information work.
- Use of data in research, data management and digital curation.
- Development of library services related to digital data, data curation and management.
- Analysis of collections (quantitative aspect).
- Big data. Web and social media data to assess users' information needs, experiences and library satisfaction.
- Data visualization software and its use.
- Legal and ethical aspects of data analytics.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the possibilities and applications of data analytics in the context of a modern library and information work;
- is able to visualize data;
- can initiate projects to analyze data of a library or a information center.
