Course aims
To provide Master's students possibility to carry out in-depth study and analysis of the selected problem, based on contemporary theories and research methods;
To support the ability to create a research problem, identify the actuality of the research problem, the use of modern methods to solve them, and to present the research content with the results obtained in the analysis;
To support the development of academic writing skills.
Brief description of the course
The master´s thesis includes thorough independent research and analysis on a chosen subject, relying on contemporary theories and research methods. The research process follows the research life cycle of a specific field: the problem setting, research questions/hypothesis, a theoretical framework/literature review, data collection and analytical methods and techniques, presentation of results and discussion, research formalization (scientific language and style, referencing).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is able to investigate in professional knowledge base;
- has in-depth knowledge in the narrower research areas of information science;
- is able to develop research problems and use contemporary methods for solving them;
- is able to write down and argue the problems in information sciences in Estonian and English;
- is able to present and publicly defend his/her research results, and discuss in information science field;
- has an ability to critically evaluate and analyse information science research;
- is able to take part in an international research project in information science field.
