Course aims
The aim of the course is:
- to make students understand data: nature, different types of data, policies of data usage and data management principles;
- to introduce common approaches to data and the main characteristics of data;
- to introduce in more detail open source data and how to use them. The course also describes the Open Data policies in Estonia in comparison to other European countries.
Brief description of the course
The course is intended to be multidisciplinary. All students, who are interested in data, are welcome.

Students will be introduced with basic concepts and approaches to data. The main topic of the course is open data, (open) big data and linked data are also introduced.

Students take part in practical work using open data. Students participate in group work and perform individual assignments.

Several soft skills will also be improved during the course, such as critical thinking, the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, and the presentation of ideas in oral and written formats.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows data concepts and approaches;
- understands how open data can be used and managed;
- knows open data initiatives in Estonia and European countries.
