Course aims
To provide basic knowledge about the nature, development and regulatory environment of archive management.
Brief description of the course
Development of the concept of archives. Types of archives and their competence. Current topics in modern archiving. Development and coordination of archive management.
Organization of paper and digital archive management in a public and private organization. The profession of an archivist and professional ethics.
Development of the legal environment of archive management. Archives Act and implementing acts. Treatment of archiving in other legislation. Relationship between archiving legislation and industry standards and guidelines.
Archive Management Standards, Open Archival Information System (OAIS), ISAAR and ISAD (G) Overview. Document retention standards.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- masters the basic terminology of archive management;
- is aware of the nature of archive management and the problems and developments in the creation, management and preservation of records and documents with a long preservation both in Estonia and internationally;
- has an overview of the functionalities of information systems for long-term document management;
- is able to use the provisions of archive management standards in his / her professional work;
- has knowledge of the legislation governing the management of archives;
- is able to use archive management legislation and instructions in his / her professional work.
