Course aims
To create prerequisites for the development of knowledge about the history and theory of career information, sources of career and labor market information, design and description of collections, and the principles of compiling databases. To support the development of students' knowledge and practical skills in information retrieval and compilation of databases, development and provision of career information services, and communication with various client groups.
Brief description of the course
An overview of the history and theory of career information (structures and approaches, quality requirements for career information mediation, assessment and measurement tools for the information specialist); sources of career and labor market information and bases for information search; the design and description of collections of career literature (indexing, analytical description) and the principles of compiling databases. Different forms of career information services: information counseling, information communication and review services; the information service process and its components (identification of information needs, inquiry interview and information search) and different levels of information service; features of e-notification. Ethical and psychological problems arise in the service process when communicating with different customer groups. Communication skills required in information services and techniques for resolving problem and conflict situations.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
is proficient in career and labor market information sources, designing and describing collections;
- knows and is able to use information retrieval strategies and tactics;
- is able to compile a database of career literature;
- knows the goals and tasks of career information services, different forms of services and their ethical aspects;
- is able to determine the information needs of customers;
- knows and is able to use the possibilities of information technology to satisfy career information needs in the provision of various information services;
- is able to communicate with different career information client groups.
