Course aims
To support obtaining knowledge on theoretical approaches, models, present day research and development trends in book science.
To develop the competence of analytical analysis to specify and evaluate documentary cultural heritage.
Brief description of the course
Book science. Anglo-American school, French-German school of book studies. Theoretical approaches in book science: R.Darnton, T.Adams and N.Barker. K.Glombiowski's and K.Migon's funstional theory. D.McKenzie sociology of texts. P.Raabe book culture. Methods and sources of book history.
Research areas in book science. National publications. Estonica. Baltica. National bibliography. Retrospective national bibliography. Estonian memory institutions as conservators of written cultural heritage.
Historiography of Estonian book science. Present-day problems of book science.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
A student who has passed the course:
- has detailed knowledge of theoretical approaches and developments of book science in the world and in Estonia;
- is able to understand the role of book science in larger context of information sciences;
- knows criteria for determining national cultural heritage and to value the importance of a book or a collection in the context of cultural heritage,
- is able to think critically, to analyse book science texts and mediate book science information in professional discussion or in written form;
- has an overview of development trends and acute problems of book science.
