Course aims
Create possibilities to obtain knowledge of the essence of cultural heritage, digitisation as a mean of preservation of documentary heritage and access to it, as well as to obtain skills in using digital heritage collections.
Brief description of the course
Cultural heritage. Documentary heritage. Digital cultural heritage.
Preservation of cultural heritage. Cultural heritage policies in Europe. UNESCO and EU initiatives in preservation of cultural heritage.
Digital cultural heritage in Estonia.
Digitisation: planning a digitisation project, digitisation process. Collaboration in digitisation. Preservation of digital cultural heritage. Access to digital heritage collections. Juridical aspects of using digital heritage collections.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
A student who has passed the course:
- understands the essence of documentary and digital cultural heritage and is able to describe different types of cultural heritage;
- has the overview of the preservation policy of cultural heritage in European Union and in Estonia and understands the aim and importance of preservation of cultural heritage;
- is aware of juridical problems concerning digitisation and accessibility of cultural heritage and is capable to folow the authorship rights;
- knows the planning process for digitisation and is able to evaluate the complexity of digitised collection;
- is able to work in a team and be flexible;
- has competence to use digital cultural heritage collections.
