Course aims
To create prerequisites for the development of systemic understanding about online health information behavior and its relations to eHealth competence, health behaviour and health
Brief description of the course
This course focuses on online health information behavior and relevant theoretical approaches.
Topics:
- Health information behavior as a subtype of information behavior. Its links to health literacy, health behavior, and health.
- Online health information behavior (OHISB) and the roots of its theoretical framework (theory of planned behavior, model of technology acceptance, model of health beliefs, etc.).
This course focuses on online health information behavior and relevant theoretical approaches.
Topics:
- Health information behavior as a subtype of information behavior. Its links to health literacy, health behavior, and health.
- Online health information behavior (OHISB) and the roots of its theoretical framework (theory of planned behavior, model of technology acceptance, model of health beliefs, etc.).
- Relevant models of information studies to describe OHISB (Savolainen's daily health information model, Johnson's comprehensive information search model, etc.)
- Overview of studies on OHISB. Relationships between OHISB and information seekers’ socio-demographic characteristics, digital competence, eHealth literacy, personality etc.
- Health information needs. Active and passive information retrieval (Wilson). Triggers and barriers to information retrieval and problems encountered.
- Health information sources and misinformation. Conflicting information. Assessment and selection of sources and its relation to digital information literacy.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- is aware of the models relevant to online health information behavior;
- knows the connections between health, health information behavior and eHealth literacy;
- can initiate simpler research on online health information behavior.
