Course aims
Learning about the specific properties of information in digital form and issues these raise for preserving digital information. Introducing main concepts and current research topics of digital preservation.
Brief description of the course
Main concepts and issues of digital preservation. Categories of digital objects.
Homework (not graded): digital archives around the world.
What to archive and how to appraise the value of digital objects?
Practical homework 1: Significant properties of different digital objects.
Seminar: Significant properties of digital objects and their use in planning preservation.
Metadata for digital archives. File formats and storage media used in digital archives.
Practical homework 2: Metadata for digital preservation.
Seminar: Trusting digital archives – requirements and tools.
Managing digital archives: the OAIS reference model and its applications in practice.
Digital preservation and repositories – future perspectives.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the differences of archiving and preservation of paper based and digital materials;
- is able to critically evaluate strategies and models of digital archiving;
- understands the need of establishing digital archive in the organisation;
- is able to define the procedures for digital archiving and preservation according to the character of the object;
- demonstrates orientation in required metadata for preservation.
