Course aims
- To provide knowledge about the concepts of electronic publishing and role in the delivery of information in the contemporary world; about the formats and standards used in electronic publishing
- To give practical skills of web publishing using different software solutions
Brief description of the course
The concept of electronic publishing, its different forms and development.
Features of electronic publications, their advantages and disadvantages in comparison with paper publications
Content of electronic publications: scholarly literature, Open Access scholarly journals; electronic reference works; web publications of fiction
Economic and legal aspects of electronic publishing: cost of production, prices of publications. The impact of copyright on electronic publishing and usage of electronic publications. Digital Rights Management systems.
Hardware and software for creating and reading electronic publications, different formats and standards
Multimedia applications in electronic publications
Publishing in Web 2.0. – wikis, blogging, social networks
Web publishing, creation of a webpage with the help of free software.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Student
- is aware of different forms of electronic publishing, their charateristic features and usage possibilities
- is able to take into consideration legal and ethical issues of electronic publishing
- orients in different modern publishing models (including Web 2.0)
- is able to publish different documents in the web
