Course aims
To create prerequisites for developing knowledge on international standards for bibliographic description and classification of documents. To support the development of practical skills for cataloguing and claasification of documents in the automated library systems.
Brief description of the course
Bibliographical registration, functions of bibliographic records. International standards for bibliographic description (ISBD). Catalogues and cataloguing rules.Electronic catalogue as a part of automated library system INNOPAC. MARC formats for electronic cataloguing. Practical cataloguing. Systematic approach to the semantic arrangement of information. Classification. Universal and professional classification systems. Subject catalogues. Classification in electronic catalogues. Comparative analysis of information languages. Practical classification.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Knowledge of the conception and principles of bibliographic registration, international standards and cataloguing rules;
Understanding of principles of functioning of an electronic catalogue, methods and sources of catalogue data;
Ability to describe and catalogue documents in the automated electronic systems;
Ability to classify documents with UDK.
