Course aims
To provide an overview of the main traditional and electronic information resources that are required for the university studies.
To provide an overview of the theoretical strategies and tactics in information retrieval.
To acquire knowledge of citation requirements.
To acquire experience in practical information retrieval.
Brief description of the course
Information society and information literacy. Main conceptions and theories. Internet as an information seeking environment. Estonian web. Recognizing and identifying of information need. The process of information seeking. Information seeking strategies and tactics. The formulation of information enquiries, and retrieval techniques. The identifying of appropriate information resources, retrieval, selection procedure. The information resources that reflect the document’s presence, and its location. Information seeking at library: traditional and new opportunities. Information seeking in thematical catalogues, by search engines and meta-search engines and web-portals. Information seeking in academic research databases and journals. Information resources for factual retrieval. The evaluation of information retrieval, and information resources. The citation of publications.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has skills for finding required information;
- can use retrieval methods.
