Course aims
To introduce the key concepts and approaches in interactive storytelling. To equip students with the basic knowledge required to analyze existing interactive narratives and design their own.
Brief description of the course
Types and functions of interactive narratives. Interactive storytelling across media and cultural forms. Ludonarrative, procedural rhetoric, and narrative framing in games. Plot mapping, worldbuilding, and characterisation in interactive stories. Branching narratives and meaningful choices. Narrative emergence and meaning-making in emergent storytelling. Interactive narrative structures in games. Quests and campaigns. Tools for designing interactive stories.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- lists the major types of interactive stories;
- defines key terms and concepts in interactive storytelling;
- discusses and classifies examples of interactive storytelling in games and other media;
- analyzes existing interactive narratives in terms of their structural and rhetorical features;
- designs a concept for an interactive narrative and presents it using key terms in the field.
