Course aims
To facilitate clear communication between learning game designers and the primary educational stakeholders such as teachers, parents and funding agencies.
Brief description of the course
Designing effective learning games requires an understanding and appreciation for the types of deep learning that are contained in games. It also requires that a student is fluent in the terminology that can be used to describe how these games interact with curricula and learning environments. The designer must be aware of the design constraints of creating an educational game. Further, they must be able to communicate their design vision to the primary stakeholders of a learning game design project.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- explains the design constraints for a proposed learning game project;
- outlines key theories in engagement used in game-based learning;
- judges whether or not a learning game adequately meets the intended learning outcomes of a curriculum;
- shows how games can be integrated into a curriculum.
