Course aims
The aim of the course is to connect approaches in educational sciences and psychology with those in game design and game studies. In doing so, the course examines how learning occurs in games, how digital and non-digital games can support learning, and what properties games have as learning environments.
Brief description of the course
Types of learning in games. Benefits and limitations of game-based learning. Situated learning matrix.
Games, motivation, and learning. Self-determination theory.
Performance and mastery. Achievement goal theory. Learner typologies and player typologies.
Incorporating uncertainty in game design and instructional design.
Frustration and stress. Self-regulation and coping strategies.
Creativity and expression. Systems model of creativity.
Social learning. Distributed cognition. Communities of practice and affinity spaces.
Accessibility in games and learning. The neurodiversity paradigm.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has a basic understanding of how games can support and shape learning;
- has the ability to apply key concepts in educational psychology to analysing and designing educational games.
