Course aims
The aim of the course is to create an understanding of information visualization, different modalities of data representation and related issues. Students will gain knowledge on information visualization history; representation techniques; human perception of data; data presentation taking into account visual, multisensorial, temporal and spacial aspects; and interaction design of data representation systems. Case studies will also be analyzed. The course’s practical side consists of information visualization and representation tutorials and exercises, culminating in a final project and report.
Brief description of the course
The course will consist of theoretical and practical sessions. The theoretical sessions include: introduction to information visualization; information representation; data presentation; interaction with information visualization systems; multisensorial approaches; and case-studies. The practical sessions consist of tutorials and exercises where students will gain hands-on knowledge creating information visualization and representation systems. For the independent work, the students prepare a final practical project, with a short report contextualizing the project and justifying the design decisions made.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- contextualizes information visualization and representation historically;
- understands the main basic concepts, issues surrounding information visualization and representation;
- gains knowledge on representation techniques and associated human factors;
- outlines and analyzes the spacial and temporal aspects surrounding information presentation, and related perception issues;
- understands multisensorial aspects of information representations, beyond traditional visualization;
- applies interaction design to information representation systems and to builds information visualization and representation systems.
