Course aims
To introduce the main concepts and approaches in interactive storytelling.
To equip students with the basic knowledge required to analyze existing interactive narratives and design their own.
Brief description of the course
Types and applications of interactive narrative. Interactivity and related concepts: ergodic literature (Aarseth); procedural rhetoric (Bogost); ludonarrative (Hocking).
Interactive narratives across media and cultural forms. Performativity and environmental storytelling. Interactive narratives in digital games and computational art.
Narrative and simulation. Narrative emergence and meaning-making in emergent storytelling.
Frameworks and methods for designing interactive digital narratives.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- can identify key directions and debates in the field of interactive storytelling; discuss practical uses of interactive narratives across various fields citing specific examples;
- can apply key vocabulary in the field of interactive storytelling in order to analyze the structural and rhetorical features of existing digital narrative experiences;
- can produce conceptual designs for digital interactive narratives; present and articulate these designs using relevant concepts in the field.
