Course aims
The goal of the course is to develop knowledge on the fundamental principles of perception, and symbolisation, as well as on the design practices and tools that can be used to create informative graphics using information visualisation systems and tools. The course also includes an overview of the most common spatial analysis methods as well as a selection of advanced visualisation paradigms.
This provides students with a set of skills that enables them to produce effective visualisations of their data, and thus adequately represent, support, and communicate their findings.
Brief description of the course
This course comprises:
- Perception, representation and recognition
- Semiotics
- Visual salience
- Visualisation systems and tools
- Spatial analysis methods
- Advanced topics in visualization
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- understands and discusses fundamental concepts related to visual perception and visual representation;
- understands advantages and issues of main visualization methods;
- effectively visualises quantitative data.
