Course aims
The purpose of the course is to raise awareness among HCI designers in ranging from developing communication systems for non-speaking and hearing-impaired people to technology to support older people, and addresses the particular challenges older people have with much modern technology.
Brief description of the course
The course contains of following modules:
1. Communication Systems for Non-Speaking and Hearing-Impaired People
2. TV Subtitling for Hearing-Impaired People
3. Word Prediction for Non-Speaking People and Systems for those with Dyslexia
4. Providing Reusable Conversation for Non-Speaking People
5. Story Telling and Emotion in Synthetic Speech
6. Lessons Learned from Designing AAC Devices
7. IT Systems for Older People
8. Designing IT Systems for Older People
9. Ordinary and Extra-Ordinary Human Computer Interaction
10. User Sensitive Inclusive Design
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Students will learn:

• The concepts of "Ordinary and Extra-ordinary HCI", "User Sensitive Inclusive Design", and "Design for Dynamic Diversity";
• The practical and ethical challenges of working in clinically related fields;
• How "Creative Design" techniques can be used as extensions of "User Centered" and "Universal Design";
• How use of professional theatre and other methods for raising designers' awareness of the challenges faced by older and disabled people, ways of engaging with these groups, and of ascertaining what they "want" rather than just what they "need”

Additional information
This course in delivered partialy online. Online activities are organized in biweekly modules, each focusing on a specific set of topics. Each topic is discussed each second Thursday in person, then students should implement an assignment and by neccessary meet with facilitator online.
Design exercises should be presented in personal blogs avaialble for the group discussion and following assesment.
The presentations of essay will be presented at the last in-person meeting.
