Course aims
The course aims are to provide skills and understanding about IT infrastructure, terminology, safety management, maintenance, usage, audit and purchase principles, problem solving in a basic level to the educational technologist that will work with ICT manager/administrator and who does not have the needed skill-set yet.
NB! We recommend that follow up course will be the Infrastructure seminar when there is possibility to visit different workplaces (university, high-schools or other) and discuss the job requirements and tasks of Educational technologist and ICT administrator, support, leader.
Brief description of the course
Topics:
a. hardware in schools – what to buy, how to configure, maintenance, use equipment in a safe manner (work security and safety): projector, computer, scanner, printer, document camera, copier, camcorder and camera, interactive boards, TV, robotics, electronic measurement devices with sensors. Smart devices, educational applications.
b. System and network: installing and maintaining the system, drivers, problem solving, mass install and maintenance (GNU/Linux, Microsoft, Apple). Basics of secure management and internet safety. Network: LAN, WAN, WiFi. E-systems in schools and cloud solutions (Google Apps Education, Office365, e-school, learning systems briefly).
c. IT audit and planning a development project. The course consist lectures, seminars and independent work (see in participation and assessment).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- has an understanding of the importance of cyber safety and internet safety policies. Improves the systems and peoples behavior in the workplace accordingly.
- has an overview of the school systems and hardware regarding the IT infrastructure (hardware, mobile tools, cloud services, system, network), and understands contemporary trends in the field;
- knows and is able to maintain the hardware used at school, find and create tutorials and safety regulations and also implement them (teach/brief others);
- has the skill set to analyze the hardware upkeep of the school and find opportunities for improvement (can detect errors and if necessary also repair or order repair or conduct an utilization);
- has understandings the value and need for using cloud services, e-systems management in the schools context.
- has ability to carry out a basic level of IT audit and plan for development project, purchase of hardware;
