Course aims
To provide an overview of common statistical methods in the social sciences, and to teach how to correctly use and interpret quantitative statistical methods necessary for writing a bachelor's-level thesis.
Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of common statistical methods in the social sciences to support understanding of the content of scientific articles and develop skills in conducting independent research. During the course, students will learn to use a data analysis program, correctly select analytical methods, and interpret the results of analyses.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the methods of quantitative data analysis common in the social sciences;
- knows how to distinguish between descriptive and inferential statistics;
- knows how to distinguish between parametric and nonparametric methods;
- knows how to choose an analysis method appropriate to the research question and the types of variables being analyzed;
- knows how to interpret descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, significance tests, and reliability indicators;
- knows how to use a data analysis program with the help of instructions.
