Course aims
To give overview of software licensing, free and GPL based software, and it´s essence. Unix-like operation systems, particularly Linux and it´s use in a desktop computer. Administrating and using Linux-based desktop computer (installation, configuration and software updating).
Brief description of the course
Introduc to software licenses and their diferences. Different degrees of software freedom. History and determination of GPL-based software. Introduction to Unix-like operation systems and their diferences compared to Windows operation systems. Linux and his distributions. Acquaintancing to desktop Linux-distributions (Fedora, Suse, Mandrake). Linux desktop environments (KDE, Gnome, IceVM, BlackBox). Adjustment of desktop. Office tools (OpenOffice.org, Koffice), software for graphics and design (GIMP, Dia), Internet software (browsers, mail and news clients, filetransfer), groupware (Evolution, Kontact), special software. Using Linux shell, Midnight Commander. Installing Linux, basics of system management, basics of user management, basics of system security, basics of software management (rpm, apt, yum, up2date). Course bases primarily on practical exercises.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
Can independently use Linux desktop; able to deal with common problems in Linux based desktop usage.
