Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of the historical connections and aesthetic commonalities between Japanese literature and cinematography. The curriculum covers adaptations of well-known literary works and introduces both the films and the prose works that served as their source material. During the course, students will acquire theoretical methods for analyzing Japanese works, allowing them to address narrative shifts, visual language, and the impact of cultural context on the creative process.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the main trends, authors, and significant film adaptations in Japanese literature and cinema;
- understands the relationships between literary texts and cinema, and the theoretical foundations of the adaptation process;
- applies methods of comparative analysis to interpret Japanese literary works and their film versions;
- critically evaluates intermedial transfers and the transformation of cultural meanings within the Japanese context;
- uses relevant digital databases, learning environments, and presentation tools to locate, analyze, and format study materials and assignments.
