Course aims
Students will gain an overview of the main currents and thinkers in Japanese philosophy during the Meiji, Taishō and Shōwa periods and will be able to express key concepts in their own words.
Students will know which Western thinkers were in dialogue with and will thus be able to compare similarities and differences in the respective philosophies.
Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of:
1) the main currents in Western philosophy that influenced Japanese philosophers in the 19th and 20th centuries;
2) the main figures of the Kyōto school (including Nishida Kitarō, Tanabe Hajime, Nishitani Keiji);
3) the main concepts of Japanese philosophy (including pure experience, absolute eimiski, the field of śūnyatā).
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- be able to place the ideas discussed in the course in the broader context of philosophy;
- be able to recast philosophical ideas in the form of arguments;
- can assess the validity of philosophical arguments.
