Brief description of the course
The course provides an overview of the development of modern Chinese culture, ideas, and society from a historical perspective. It examines developments in Chinese intellectual history, literature, theatre, film, and visual arts, and their relationship to broader social changes.
Students learn to distinguish between different cultural forms and trends, use key concepts, and compare Chinese cultural phenomena with European and other traditions.
The course also discusses the role of Chinese culture in the cultural history of Asia and the wider world.

Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- knows and explains key developments, phenomena, and figures in modern Chinese history and culture across different fields (e.g. literature, theatre, film, visual arts);
- understands the relationship between cultural and social change and its impact on Chinese intellectual life and identity;
- uses appropriate academic concepts and terminology in describing and analysing Chinese cultural phenomena;
- applies a comparative approach by relating developments in Chinese culture to European and other traditions;
- explains and interprets the role of Chinese culture in the cultural history of Asia and the wider world;
