Course aims
"Analysis of Religious Processes" is a course that deals with various topics in the study of religion. The specific topic changes every academic year. In the 2023/24 academic year, the subject of the course is religions and cults in the Roman Empire.
Brief description of the course
The specific topic of the course changes every year. 2019 the topic of the course was gnosticism. This year the theme is religions and cults in the Roman Empire. The course examines various religions, cults and religious movements in the Roman Empire (from the 1st to the 4th century), Greco-Roman religion, Judaism, early Christianity and Manilism. Their mutual relations, activities in Roman society and relations with the state are discussed. Students are required to work through the textbook, read the duplicated texts that the lecturer distributes to them on a regular basis, and prepare and deliver three short presentations in the auditorium, which are discussed in joint seminars.
Learning outcomes in the course
Upon completing the course the student:
- the student has systematic knowledge of the religious history of the Roman Empire;
- knows various religions, cults and religious movements common in the Roman Empire;
- can see religion in the context of Roman political and social history;
- orients himself in the basic concepts and theories of Roman religious history.
