Course aims

Knowledge about main events, ideas and institutions that have formed French society and culture from the fall of the Roman Empire up to the French Revolution.

Brief description of the course

Historical events; world view and mentality of the French during the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Enlightenment; social structure in different periods, State and Church and the process of secularisation, important figures, ideas that formed the society and that led to the French Revolution.

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- has the basic knowledge about the main historical events;
- has capacity to analyse the ideas that formed the society in their historical, social and cultural context;
- has ability to understand certain tendencies in contemporary society as the inheritor of its past.
