Course aims
The main objective is to study the origins and consecutive changes that have shaped the Spanish language as we know it throughout the history.
Brief description of the course
During each class, the language will be studied from two points of view: the historical context which brought about the transformations of the Spanish language and a more profound study of those semantic, lexical and phonological transformations.
Each class will start with a student presentation introducing the historical context surrounding a new change in the Spanish language, with a study of those to follow by using transcriptions. This study will be done following the cronological evolution of the language:
1. Latinization
2. Influence of Al-Andalus
3. The Dawn of the language: Gloss
4. Spread though the Camino de Santiago
5. Castilian Epic poems and heroes
6. The debates
7. Toledo School of Translators - first written prose
8. Tales (Castille and India)
9. El Arcipreste de Hista
10. La Celestina
11. Don Quijote
