Course aims

Foudational course in the grammar of English with the focus on syntax: identifying traditional parts of speech, phrases, clauses and sentence types.

Brief description of the course

The topics under discussion are: genetic affiliation and typological profile of English, exceptional and noteworthy features, traditional parts of speech, noun phrases, verb phrases (simple and periphrastic tenses and aspects, complements and modifiers), adjectives and adverbs, closed categories, clause structure (types of main and subordinate clauses).

Learning outcomes in the course

Upon completing the course the student:
- knows the technical terminology in the field;
- is able to identify traditional parts of speech, determine phrase and clause structure and various sentence types..
