Brief description of the course
Introduction, main part, historical overview: Panin’s, Greek and Alexandrian schools, medieval grammars, the grammar of Port-Royal, comparative grammar (Bopp, Grimm), Neogrammarians. Contemporary typological treatments. Estonian-Russian language relations: historical aspect, Russian influence on Estonian, Estonian influence on the language of the Russians in Estonia. Phonetical accent. Russian accent in Estonian: temporal structure, vowel segments, consonantism, palatalization. Lexicology: meaning, adaptation of foreign words. Evaluative category, generic category, number. Verb: temporal category, aspect, kinds of speech, mood, voice, non-finite verb forms. Declinable words. Cases. Adjective and comparison. Question, word order. Sociolinguistic and sociocultural differences, differences between non-verbal means of expression.
